Your Name Assignment
How The Letters of My Name Are Connected To The World Around Us
As stated within the assignments outline, the purpose of the project was to be able to spell your name from letters of the alphabet found in the natural world around us. I believe that the underlying goal was to train one’s eye to be creative and discover the hidden geometry of our surroundings in both a micro and macro sense. In order to find things that represent the letters in my name, I tried to look for things out of the ordinary, as well as things that peaked my interest. I had to become curious and conscious of all of my surroundings. I discovered fallen oak leaves on a bed of pine needles and noticed and ‘S’ as I got closer with a macro lens. In order to find a 'T', I looked around the bricks of my house, and found an area with a lot of wear and tear and thought it looked like a credible ‘T’. While walking across my front lawn, I came across a fallen pine cone and a dandelion flower in bloom just above it representing the lowercase dotted 'i'. For the 'R', I found a light post that contrasted well against the fever blue sky. In the gardens about my house, I tried to search for patterns and found Verbena plant stems that branched off in the shape of the letter ‘L’. Searching for the second 'i', I found a brilliant light post that lit up well in the evening. For the 'n', I discovered a beautiful representation within a dead Monarch butterfly’s wing laying on the sidewalk. Finally, for the 'g', I found an oak tree with some weather or growth markings on the bark that well represented the last letter in my name, Stirling.
